In Feb. 2017, the
department of civil engineering organised a five days engineering survey camp
for the B.Tech 3rd year students. The purpose of organising survey camp is to
relate the class room learning with real world situations. It also provides the
students an opportunity to feel the difference between theoretical knowledge
and practical work and therefore develop a quality in the students by virtue of
which they will be able to make a bridge between the two different aspects of
engineering education. They learn the essential knowledge of different
surveying techniques relevant to their professional and real work practice in
civil engineering. The camp also aims to enhance the leadership and teamwork
capabilities in the students. This Survey Camp was organized in Leisure Valley,
Faridabad.
The events and
experimental works of survey camp were divided into five-day schedule and as
per the schedule field works were done. In the field works various experiments
and events were performed to learn the technical aspects required in surveying.
First students were divided into 05 groups, each group of 15 -16 students, which
were monitored by faculties. The day wise schedule was provided to the students
and faculties. During the period of survey camp student with the faculties left
the institute campus at 8:45 a.m. and headed towards the camp site and returned
to the college campus at 4:15 p.m. daily. From 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. students
were engaged in performing exercises as in time scheduled. After successful
completion of the survey camp, students were asked to compile all data and
present it on drawing sheet and prepare a detailed report.
The survey camp was a
great experience for the students of Civil Engineering department. This survey
camp resulted in encouraging and supporting the students in better
understanding of the real works. The students were awarded of the spirit and
importance of teamwork. Experiences of such survey camps are invaluable for
enhancing a student understanding of the field and site work. Interaction of
our students with the different peoples greatly improved their networking and
personal development. The opportunity to organise survey camp was an asset for
the students and it would be great to continue the same tradition.
Outcomes of survey camp:
Students
who successfully attended survey camp will be able:
- To prepare a
topographical map of an area showing the hills, valleys, rivers, roads,
forests, etc.
- To prepare a
cadastral map showing the boundaries of fields, houses and other
properties.
- To prepare an
engineering map which shows the details of engineering works such as
roads, railways, reservoirs, irrigation canals, etc.
- To prepare a
military map showing the road and railway communications.
- To prepare a
contour map to determine the capacity of a reservoir and to find the best
possible route for roads, railways, etc.
·
To measure of
land and the fixation of its boundaries
